The Designview
all-vinyl window series from A & H Window Co. offers a DP-50 rating,
a requirement of in many coastal building codes. It includes Series 40
single-hung windows and Series 45 double-hung windows. The company reports
that this is the first window series to include a full 49&Mac218;16-inch
jamb for the entire wall width. This allows for installations that are
flush with the interior wall, and eliminates the need for labor-intensive
wood jamb extensions and drywall returns. The windows also feature integral
nailing fins that seal openings, preventing drafts and moisture, and create
attachment points for builders during installation, the manufacturer reports
Republic Windows
& Doors has designed the Classic II window collection to offer the
look of an expensive wood window in a low-maintenance vinyl product. The
windows can be customized with a variety of options, including luxurious
V-groove glass in five designs, a selection of grids and exterior colors,
and woodgrain interior finishes, the manufacturer states. Glass options
include Heat Mirror, TUF Glass, Stay Clean glass, and Lo-E2, in any combination.
Standard features include fusion-welded construction with metal reinforcement,
night vent latches and concealed Stealth window locks, equal glass site
lines, and a stepped sloped sill.
Retractable screens are in demand and no where else is this more apparent
than in the patio door market, where consumers pay in excess of $300 retail
for the product. Preferred Engineering
Products Ltd. offers patio door manufacturers an integrated self-storing
screen that is simple and elegant, easy to manufacture and almost impossible
to damage—all for just few dollars more than a fixed screen, the
company states. The Slide’N’Hide is a component system assembled
in less than two minutes. Once assembled, a simple cartridge is easily
installed or removed from the door. Said to be nearly impossible to damage
while shipping and next to impossible to damage otherwise, the screen
or cartridge, if damaged, can simply be returned to the point of purchase
for a replacement. This feature becomes attractive when comparing the
product to some after-market retractable screens requiring a technician
to install or repair. The retractable screen is designed to provide an
opportunity for manufacturers who wish to differentiate their products
and increase profits and market share.

Architectural
Testing Inc. reports that its 52-inch solar calorimeter is the first in
the country to be accredited by the National Fenestration Rating Council
to perform physical testing for solar heat-gain coefficients under NFRC
102. The solar calorimeter at the company’s Fresno, CA, facility
permits manufacturers previously unable to receive SHGC numbers through
simulation to receive an NFRC rating based on tested results. These ratings
allows manufacturers to market their products into regions currently enforcing
compliance to the NFRC standard. ATI is also developing an 84-inch solar
calorimeter to test larger products.
To be launched in June, Ultra-Max pile weatherseal is being introduced
by Ultrafab Inc. for high-end residential, commercial and architectural
applications Exceeding AAMA certification standards by 200 percent, according
to the supplier, the product has also been developed with resistance to
mold, mildew, algae and fungus in mind. Featuring ultrasonically welded
components, solid polypropylene backing, pile directors to keep pile optimally
positioned and a choice of two fin options, the weatherstrip is designed
to withstand direct exposure to sunlight, high humidity installations,
coastal applications and exposure in Snow Belt regions.
Now available from Chelsea Building Products, the Designer Classic is
a new construction window featuring a full width jamb. The design, which
incorporates a full width frame for 4 9&Mac218;16 -inch wall construction,
gives a classic wood look to this vinyl window. A unique feature of the
product is the cellular strip on the inside of the frame that provides
a cover over the interior return, the firm explains. The strip receives
nails or staples, allowing the interior trim to be attached to the window
with ease, eliminating the need to nail through the PVC frame. Other features
include an integral J-channel and nailing fin; an integral brickmould;
7&Mac218;8 -inch insulating glass; exterior glazing; integral interlocks
at the meeting rails; and a sloped sill. Both the frame and sash are fully
welded, and an optional T-mullion can provide added strength to twins
and triples. The window is available in double-hung or dedicated picture
unit models. Also available from the company is the Comfort Pro, a new
single-hung window for new construction. This product features a fully
welded sash and frame, the latter of which has raised designer detailing,
including a beveled exterior. An increased slope in the sill design eliminates
weep holes, while an integral full-length interlock combined with positive
dual weatherstripping ensures thermal performance. Available in horizontal
slider and single-hung side-load models, the window also features an integral
T-mullion, an R35 rating, and an optional integral beveled J-channel.

reducing the chance of damage or scratches to the finish on the mating

Resista, an exterior-grade, treated wood composite material from Woodgrain
Millwork Inc., is designed for use in door frames, brickmould and continuous
header systems. Sold as an alternative to finger-jointed pine, particularly
in coastal regions, areas of high humidity and termite-infested communities,
the material incorporates wood fibers, resins and a wood preservative
to protect against moisture, rot, decay, fungi and termite damage. Produced
as a solid piece with uniform density and consistency, the composite has
no size or profile limitations. It contains no knots or defects commonly
found in wood, and the smooth surface resists checking, cupping, splitting,
cracking or warping. Traditional fasteners may be used to install Resista.
Ashland Hardware Systems has redesigned the Instalock Slide and Swing
System. Providing a cost-effective opportunity to upgrade traditional
slider windows, the hardware features a new shoe with a four-point braking
design that ensures that the shoe engages with as little as 10 degrees
of sash rotation. With full rotation of the window sash, consumers are
able to achieve maximum window egress, optimum home ventilation, and easier
access to the outside glass for faster, simpler window cleaning. The entire
system ships completely assembled and involves only a few components to
reduce both manufacturing costs and storage requirements.
